The Hudson River School is one of Trumpeter's influences, and this painting is an homage to Thomas Cole's "The Oxbow" (if you're into the whole brevity thing). Here, the artist has transposed Cole's dramatic sky and lofty composition to the Chattanooga valley where he grew up.
Bonus trivia: Point Park, where this cannon rests, is part of Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park. And Chattanooga, off in the distance, is the United States’ first official National Park City.
